Fiat is set to build an Alfa-badged roadster using the platform of the next-generation Mazda MX-5, the two companies having signed an agreement to develop both cars together. It's likely that Alfa will be called the Spider and go into production as early as 2015, a year after the MX-5 goes on sale. In a radical departure for the Italian brand, it's possible that the pair will be produced alongside each other at Mazda's Hiroshima plant in Japan.
Sharing the platform makes sense for Fiat, which would otherwise have struggled fo justify the development costs of creating its own rear-drive sports car. The new Spider will sit beneath the forthcoming mid-engined 4C in the brand's sports car hierarchy, probably with a sub-£20K price tag.
